Like the vast majority of 50 million Tamils in South India, Sri Lankan Tamils also have poor taste for cinema since that was what they have been exposed to. Their bitterness with the Singhalese is that they could not expand this Tamil culture dominating the majority Singhalese after independence. Especially with cinema Singhalese fought hard to make better artistic movies against the south indian crap that entertained most of the Tamils and uneducated Singhalese. All though Singhala Cinema is a tiny fraction compared to South Indian movies we have won more prestigious International awards than south india. India honoured in 70`s five living masters of world cinema. They were David Lean , Akira Kurosawa, Federico Fellini, Satyajit Ray and our Lester James Peiris. Among those masters only Lester is still alive; an octogenarian
