[A social survey has revealed that 90% of the beggar population of Colombo city does not expect any benefit from state or any other organization.
The survey carried out by an independent body exposes amazing facts. 50% of the beggars are against granting houses or lands to them. 84% are against somebody providing them an employment. 90% are against social benefits and the majority of them like to remain as beggars. 79% of these beggars are physically sound. Only 21% are disabled beggars. The majority of the beggars are Sinhalese. They account to 61% while 29% are Tamils and 19% are Muslims. 72% of the beggars are males while 28% are females. 70% are adults whilst 10% are children and 20% are aged persons. 60% are begging in the day time while 37% do it in the night. For 3%, there is no proper time. The survey concludes that the members of this social stratum are total outsiders from the average society.] |
