This is what Pillayan said about problems in the East:

Q: What do you think is the cause for the sudden escalation of violence in the East?
A: Certainly the LTTE is at play, right now. According to reports there is also LTTE infiltration in the East. The counter terrorism measure adopted by the security forces in my view is inappropriate to contain the situation. Rather, it is only further encouraging terrorism. Counter terrorism measures do not necessarily refer to violence. What is happening here is that in order to counter terrorism, violence is being unleashed. I strongly feel that every action taken to counter terrorism through violence will go against the very principle of democracy. The present measures adopted to mitigate terrorism through violent means cannot win the hearts and minds of the people. They will only encourage the LTTE further.

Q: Who do you hold responsible for this counter terrorism act?
A: It is the security forces. They should be more careful in whatever action they take to counter terrorism. Their action is not weakening the forces that want to destablise the system, but instead, going against the innocent people of this province.

Q: You are the Chief Minister and people hold you responsible for the present deteriorating situation. What is your answer to them?
A: True. While I am the Chief Minister I am responsible for whatever takes place in my province. But in this instance, I cannot be held responsible for the growing violence that has affected the different communities so much. On the other hand if people in general also begin to discourage this type of violence and demonstrate their anger hostility towards this, I am sure, such forces that are hell bent on subverting the system, will lose at the end of the day, and democracy could be restored soon.

Q: The present situation certainly does not appear to improve with problems between you and your leader Karuna, continuing. What do you intend doing about this?
A: Well the squabble between my party leader and myself in my view, certainly does not reflect on the present violence that has tarnished the image of the province at present. The problem that exists between both of us is an internal one, and based on ideological differences. That is all.
