Lankan News

A rare species of albino turtle claimed to be worth over Rs.35 million had been stolen from a private turtle hatchery and research centre Kosgoda last night.

The five year old turtle, weighing 9.5 kg and 60 cm in length and 35 cm in width is one of the four such white turtles housed at the center.

The owner of the Center C. Chandrasiri Abbrew said that there was heavy demand for the animal during the past six months and that when the workers had turned up this morning the turtle was missing.

The sanctuary has three more white turtles that are said to be very small with the one that has been stolen being the most valuable.

The Kosgoda Police are conducting investigations into the incident.

His Most Extraordinary Majesty liked the people of the court to multiply their belongings he liked their accounts to grow and their purses to swell. I don t remember His Magnanimous Highness s ever demoting someone because of corruption. Let him enjoy his corruption as long as he shows his loyalty! Thanks to his unequalled memory and also to constant reports our monarch knew exactly who had how much. But as long as his subjects behaved loyally, he kept this knowledge to himself and never made use of it. But if he sensed even the slightest shadow of disloyalty, he would immediately confiscate everything . Thanks to that system of accountability, the King of Kings had everyone in his hand, and everyone knew it.

Good one Charlie !

Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) leader Ven Dr. Omalpe Sobitha thera yesterday warned that the government s complicity in the lucrative heroin trade could become a major political issue at the forthcoming polls to the Western, Uva and Southern provinces, unless punitive action was taken against those involved in the abortive bid to smuggle in heroin from Pakistan. The Customs made the detection in late August following a tip off from Pakistan Police Narcotics Division (PPND).Ven. Sobitha said that he expected all political parties, in and outside parliament, as well as the media, to pressure the government to investigate Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne s alleged involvement in the smuggling attempt.

The country s first coal-fired power plant, at Norochcholai, which has been notorious for its frequent breakdowns, is expected to be connected to the national grid today after another hiccup on Friday, a top official in the plant said .

The Island reliably learns that last Friday night engineers decided to shut down the plant to attend to a repair.

When contacted, Ceylon Electricity Board Deputy General Manager Operations and Business Strategy, Senajith Dassanayake told The Island that the 300MW plant was shut down due to a technical problem in the 'de super heat valve.

Senajith, who is also the CEB s Media Spokesman, said that though the plant could have continued its operations they didn t want to continue until it was fully restored.

Asked whether the problem had occurred before, he said that one had to expect problems since those plants were full of complications and it was the case the world over.

However, he also said that they had never experienced a similar problem before.

He confirmed that the plant would be connected to the national grid once again today.

The plant was shut down in August for nearly two months of maintenance work. The plant, commissioned in 2011, had been closed nearly 30 times, due to technical issues, varying between days and months.

However, engineers confirmed that unlike on the previous occasions, now with the assistance of Chinese engineers, they were tackling most of the issues.

Two container loads of ethanol worth Rs 40 million were seized by customs in March and it was revealed that politicians were also behind that incident. However, the government has still not taken action regarding the illegal import and has failed to punish those responsible, he said.

On August 30, the largest haul of heroin detected in the whole of South Asia was seized in Sri Lanka when authorities discovered 261 kilograms of heroin, he said, adding that the Coordinating Secretary of the PM was clearly behind the largest heroin import and he had issued a letter on behalf of the Prime Minister seeking duty waiver on the container concealing the heroin.
