MR meets Bodu Bala Sena

Monday, 28 January 2013 - 10:26 AM SL Time

Jan 27, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today stressed that acts aimed at creating ethnic discord among communities and inciting violence in the country will not be permitted under any circumstance.

The President made this stance when he met five Buddhist monks representing the controversial Buddhist activist group Bodu Bala Sena (Buddhist Power Force) of Sri Lanka today at the Temple Trees to discuss a range of issues.

During the meeting the group discussed a number of problems the majority Sinhala Buddhist community is facing and the current dispute between the some Muslim and Buddhist groups in the country.

One major issue the organization raised was the Halal Certification process for businesses and the President and the Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa explained the process in detail and the reasons for the businesses to use the certification.
President Rajapaksa while stressing that acts aimed at breaching the goodwill and the harmony between ethnicities will not be allowed under any circumstance, urged the group to help maintain the ethnic harmony in the country and not to arouse communal feelings.

The Bodu Bala Sena organization is accused of inciting and organizing violence against Muslims in the country and has been criticized by moderate Buddhist organizations and leading Buddhist monks in the country.

The Buddhist monks` group led by Kirama Vimalajothi Nayaka Thero with Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero and Vitharandeniye Nanda Thero however, claimed that there are other extremist groups, which create violence using the organization`s name for their own political agenda and the Bodu Bala Sena does not condone such acts of belittling other religions and inciting violence.

The President advised the group to carry out their work without creating conflicts with other religions and maintaining the ethnic and religious harmony in the country

Minister of Water Supply and Drainage Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Petroleum Industries Susil Premajayantha, Deputy Minister of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardena, Provincial Minister Udaya Gammanpila, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Chief-of-Staff Gamini Senarath were also present at the discussion.

Extremist groups back racism

Top level investigations by a hand picked team of detectives have already begun on two extremists groups that are attempting to incite communal violence between the majority Sinhala community and the minority Muslims, well informed sources disclosed to The Nation. Sources declined to divulge the names of the two extremists groups but added that one of them was receiving foreign assistance to incite communal violence in Sri Lanka after LTTE terrorism was crushed and peace restored. Intelligence authorities have reported that foreign hands were working to destabilize Sri Lanka inciting communal violence to bring the government into disrepute , claimed a top Defense official.

In a move to probe this issue, at Parliamentary level, the government has decided to set up a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) comprising members from all political parties in Parliament. Irrigation Minister and the Leader of the House, Nimal Siripala de Silva told The Nation yesterday that when Parliament meets on February 6, he will be moving a motion requesting upon the Speaker to appoint a PSC to probe this threat that endangers national security.

Minister de Silva said that this issue would also be discussed at the party leaders meeting in Parliament this week. The Minister pointed out that a poisonous SMS text message and Facebook campaign had been launched both here and overseas to create disharmony among communities living in this multi-ethnic country. At the Cabinet press briefing held last week, Minister of Mass Media and Information, Keheliya Rambukwella too claimed certain groups were carrying out an organized campaign of racism within the country. He said stern action would be taken against such groups, once, more evidence comes to light.

this is quite true.. just recently i watched a YouTube video, that shows burning of Quran by bunch of people pretending to be buddhists, then i looked at the uploaders profile, the bugger also has many videos insulting buddhism as well...so there is good chance this is a well planned campaign by the likes of Amigos to create wedge between buddhsist and muslims in sri lanka.
