Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms, Chandrasiri Gajadeera yesterday told The Island that an investigation would be done immediately to find out how a haul of illegal items were smuggled into Welikada prison complex.

This came to light, when the Prison Intelligence unit and the police Special Task Force personnel conducted a joint raid inside the prison cells, on Monday, from 1. 45 p.m. to late at night. During the search, they found 126 mobile phones, 55 sim cards, 44 phone batteries, 38 phone chargers, 20 hand free sets and heroin weighing five grammes.

The Minister also said that if any prison officer was involved in smuggling those items into the prison directly or indirectly, he would take stern action against those personnel. He emphasized that such raids would be conducted intermittently to combat the problem.

He said that the inmates had been conducting their criminal operations outside with the use of those items that were recovered on Monday.

The prison intelligence would be strengthened further as 100 new intelligence officers were being trained at the moment, he said.

He also said that the operation was successful as the intelligence was able to inform the ministry of this racket and that helped the ministry to take necessary action.
