Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena yesterday requested university lecturers to attend to the marking of AL answer scripts which have been delayed for a month due to their trade union action.
Examination Commissioner W M N J Pushpakumara sent letters in this regard to lecturers who have to report for paper marking and the minister hoped the lecturers will respond positively.
The minister said university lecturers helped conduct the GCE Advanced Level examination successfully in the past. They have prepared exam papers, printed them, packed them and distributed papers correctly without any charge.
It is an honorary service and the Education Ministry always acknowledge and appreciate their contributions in this respect, he said.
We never considered any alternative method for paper marking. We always appreciated the lecturers honorary service. We think they will participate in the paper marking activities without engaging in trade union action, Gunawardena said.
The minister was addressing a press briefing at the Education Ministry yesterday. Over 277,000 students sat the GCE Advanced Level Examination in 2012 and there are 1.8 million answer papers to mark.
This is the future of the country. No one has the right to destroy the students future. The lecturers understand this. We think they will return for paper marking activities within the next two or three days, Minister Gunawardena said.
He said Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake discussed the university academics problems with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and matters will be solved in the near future.
Advanced Level examination paper marking should be completed within one month and seven days. Measures have also been taken to close 50 schools for this, he said.
The results of the Grade Five scholarship examination will be released on or before September 30, the minister said.

We never considered any alternative method for paper marking
Well then it's time to 'think' of an alternative method and get into operation rather than relying on merritorious charity work from other people.
This is the future of the country. No one has the right to destroy the students future
Really???? Is that why just 2.1% of the GDP (the lowest amongst many countries) is allocated for education??????
The university students are in full support of the Lecturers demands.
It's SB, BG and the govt that is destroying the future of the country.
