Sri Lanka`s governing United People`s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) says the party has not yet made a decision on naming chief ministerial candidates for the Sabaragamuwa, North Central and Eastern Provincial Councils that are slated to hold elections on Saturday (08).
UPFA General Secretary, Minister Susil Premajayantha told ColomboPage that the party would leave the slots open until the conclusion of the provincial council elections.
He denied reports that the party had named two chief ministerial candidates for the Sabaragamuwa and North Central Provinces.
`We have left the slots open and have not yet decided on whether the position would be filled according to the preferential votes,` he explained.
`However, there`s no truth to reports that the UPFA had decided on chief ministerial candidates. The party has always left the slots open,` Premajayantha added.
Local media yesterday reported that S.M. Ranjith and Athula Kumara Rahubadda have been named as UPFA`s chief ministerial candidates for the North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces respectively.
