urunegala District UNP parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera has been banned by the party from attending its election propaganda meetings until further notice.

A popular orator, Jayasekera was notified of the ban when he was about to address a meeting at Kantale on Saturday.

A high ranking party source, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that since the UNP had already opened a disciplinary inquiry against him, allowing him to address meeting was inappropriate

When Jayasekera arrived in the Eastern Province to address UNP polls propaganda meetings at Kantale, Agbopura, Maha Diwulwewa and Bhatiyagama, he had been informed by the respective organizers of the party leader s decision not to allow him to address any more UNP meetings.

Dayasiri was served with three charges by the party late last month and was summoned for a disciplinary inquiry on August 29.

At that inquiry his counsels Maithri Gunaratna and Srilal Lakthilaka raised several objections, causing it to be postponed to Oct. 02.

If this is true then the UNP has given up the Democratic Principals it stood for all these years. The Party is very progressively moving towards dictatorial policies. It is high time for members like Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene, Managala Samaraweera to make representation as they normally do to International Parliamentary Union, European Parliament, American Congress and other Human Rights Organizations to save it from this impending calamity.

I for one would like to see Dayasiri Jayasekera address the Members of the Party and the Nation one day from the new 'Paththirippuwa' now getting build along with other refurbishment work at UNP HQ.
