Sri Lanka`s Chinese-built Lakvijaya coal power plant in Norochcholai in the north western Puttalam district has broken down 12 times since its opening in March 2011, the Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka has said today.
In a document tabled in the parliament in response to a response to a question raised by JVP Colombo District MP Sunil Handunnetti, the Minister has revealed that the plant malfunctioned last on August 08.
The plant, built with a US$450 million loan from the Export-Import Bank of China, adds 300 megawatts to the national grid in its first phase.
The plant has not been in operation for 35 days last year due to the failures.
According to the Minister since its commissioning, the plant has added 1851.3 gigawatt hours to the national grid.
In response to a question on cost incurred per day to generate one unit of electricity by the Norochcholai plant, the Minister has said that the Lakvijaya plant is the most cost-effective at Rs 7.55 per unit whereas the unit cost of Kelanitissa Gas turbine 7 was at Rs 39.63 while Gas Turbine 5 cost was at Rs 61.47.
As a future course of action to remedy the problems at the Lakvijaya Plant, the government has appointed a special committee chaired by Prof K.K.Y.W. Perera to study the shortcomings in the plant.
The committee is scheduled to investigate whether the breakdown were due to the negligence of CEB officials.
Future action on the plant will depend on the recommendations of the Committee, the Minister has noted.

Disturbances were created and protests staged to prevent investors coming to Sri Lanka. The President pointed out that the life span of democracy was enhanced by the conduct of polls. Every election was conducted at the appropriate time. Now all elections are over and it is time for the entire nation to unite in developing the country. The President said the people had totally rejected the traitors of the country and they were not elected to power. He said due to the dedication of all sectors the coal power plant become a reality. Attention was now drawn to other alternative sources of energy. He referred to the many power plants that are coming up in the country. The Upper Kotmale Plant which was neglected is also in place. With all the disturbance in the past MR managed to built this plant but he could not achieve what he expected.
but Gov knows what went through.
it took good one year and half for the CEB to accept it's a second hand plant. |

One metric ton of coal is CNF US $ 127 to Colombo from Kalimantan, Indonesia.....
2 million dollars bid bond.....for tender...
4.6 millions of Coal to purchase within three and half years.....
Just keep 1% margin from the price.......hiks....
