The leader of Sri Lanka`s main opposition United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe says the blunders in the education sector in the North led to an armed conflict.
Wickremasinghe told a news conference that one reason that prompted an armed struggle in the North were the blunders in the education sector committed by successive governments.
He cautioned the present government to be mindful of this fact.
The Opposition Leader added that the armed struggle in the North started when students could not enter universities in 1973, 1974 and 1975.
According to Wickremasinghe, the opposition has proposed the setting up of a parliamentary select committee to probe the Department of Examination to determine the causes of the present crisis with regard to the GCE Advanced Level examination.
Also addressing the media, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran said the first student organizations in the North were the General Union of Eelam Students (GUES) and Eelam Revolutionary Organization of Students (EROS).
