Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is also the Minister of Finance today met with the business leaders of the country to solicit their views and proposals to prepare the next year`s budget.

During the meeting with the representatives of business community held today at the Temple Trees, the President has discussed in length ways to promote the businesses in every sector through the 2013 budget.

Representatives of various sectors supplying goods to local as well as foreign markets in sectors such as the plantations, agriculture, garments, gem and jewellery, spices, beauty culture, pharmaceuticals, dairy farming, handicraft and leather ware, attended the discussion.

The discussion focused on measures to increase the marketing of their products within the local and foreign markets while strengthening the local producer.

The President, as a policy, seeks the opinions and suggestions from various sectors before formulating the budget and holds discussions with leaders and representatives of those sectors in the country to obtain ideas and views for the preparation of the next year`s budget.

Accordingly several rounds of discussions have already been held with a number of groups including the representatives of the stock market and trade unions.

Minister Wimal Weerawansa and Finance Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera were also present at the discussion.

Please don't ask me to do all this. I have worked for over 40 years to come to this position and I must get the just reward for my long patience. Surely, the masses can't grumble the 20 to 50% that I am entitled to. Otherwise, how can I recoup all that I have spent in time and money all these years. In any case, all this money will have to be paid by generations to come. So, why worry now. Maybe the world will end by that time.

Budget by the People for the People. Views and Proposals from every sector that is engaged in economic activity in the country. So the Budget becomes a friendly compilation and a presentation by the Finance Minister of those wishes of the People.

This is participatory governance practiced in a people friendly way in a democracy anywhere in the world.
