Sri Lanka police arrest 11 people for violating election laws

Sri Lanka police have arrested 11 people for violating election laws related to the upcoming provincial council elections DIG Elections, Gamini Navaratne has said.
The police have made the arrests after receiving several complaints, the police official has said.
According to Navaratne, so far the police have received 14 complaints regarding election law violations. Most of the complaints are related to threats and unlawful propaganda.
However, the People`s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL), the election watchdog in Sri Lanka has received complaints of over 30 incidents of election related violence from the three provinces where elections are to be held next month.
According to Executive Director of PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi most violations of election laws are related to the misuse of government vehicles.
Elections are scheduled to be held in the Sabaragamuwa, North Central and Eastern Provinces on September 8th.
The Elections Commissioner has met with the representatives of political parties and independent groups Friday at the Elections Secretariat to discuss issues concerning the upcoming polls.
