In an effort to more than double its current milk production, MILCO would soon import 10,000 Milch cows from Australia and New Zealand.
MILCO Chairman Sunil Wickremasinghe yesterday said that Livestock and Rural Development Minister Arumugam Thondaman had instructed MILCO to increase milk production from the present 225,000 litres per day to 550,000 litres in the next few years he told a media conference, held to divulge the Future Plans of the Ministry, at MILCO head office in Colombo.
Wickremasinghe said that Sri Lanka had been spending around US$ 4,000 million dollars annually to import powdered milk, but such expenditure could be reduced to a great extent if the liquid milk was promoted locally.
He pointed out that most people were in the habit of drinking more powdered milk than fresh milk. People had misunderstood the importance of fresh milk.
As part of a widespread sales promotion programme of the its products, such as non-fat and sugar-free milk, set yogurt, milk products in different flavours would be made available at railway stations, main bus terminals, schools and shops, the MILCO Chairman said.

The Real Question here is how are we going to monitor and control the well-being of the imported cows ?
Looking at the level of Poverty in Our Society, I have a feeling that, these Cows will end up at the Slaughter Houses, unless they are allowed live (and breed ) another generation in Government Controlled Farms.

This is a good move to make the country self sufficient in fresh milk. SL has green fields throughout the year, why not make use of it? |

how much would the shipping cost alone come to ?
If one cow's shipping cost $500. The cost of shipment would be 10,000x500 = $5 mil
Then cost of milk cows.
So this becomes a billion $ investment. |

How come US$4,000 million means US$4 billion?? Poor women work so hard to earn some dollars... they send home US$ 3 billion a year... and this stupid bull spend $4 billion to import milk...! A typical Singalaya...! |

: MILCO to import 10,000 cows to Sri Lanka
I could not let this go without a comment.
It is true that SL spending a lot of money on importing milk powder and it is about time something is done about that. Ranil's estimate may be accurate but regardless it is still a lot.
AS for the other comment, it is stupid to do this type of calculations and put down the effort. Where did the shipping cost of $500 per cow come from? idiotic naysayers who are after GOSL. What do they suggest how to solve the problem.
There was a time that milk industry was doing well and privatization probably ruined it. There were many milk collection centers I understand.
I think this is a good idea if it is done correctly. I hope this is not one of those ideas for someone in the power to make money.
I hate to see the SL haters criticizing every little thing without offering an alternative. |

I hear that Donkey Milk is good for the brain.
I have a real Donkey, and I am ready to send it back to SL.
Once this Donkey was living in SL but ran away after there was shortage of Donkey Food and Buffaloes took over the Donkeys' job.
This Donkey is good to remove the posters pasted on Sri Lankan walls by the politicians.
But only problem is that it makes lot of noise and fart a lot.
You know who this is.....this is none other than appe Maha Moda Maha Shame alias Maha Sena. |
