In an effort to more than double its current milk production, MILCO would soon import 10,000 Milch cows from Australia and New Zealand.
MILCO Chairman Sunil Wickremasinghe yesterday said that Livestock and Rural Development Minister Arumugam Thondaman had instructed MILCO to increase milk production from the present 225,000 litres per day to 550,000 litres in the next few years he told a media conference, held to divulge the Future Plans of the Ministry, at MILCO head office in Colombo.
Wickremasinghe said that Sri Lanka had been spending around US$ 4,000 million dollars annually to import powdered milk, but such expenditure could be reduced to a great extent if the liquid milk was promoted locally.
He pointed out that most people were in the habit of drinking more powdered milk than fresh milk. People had misunderstood the importance of fresh milk.
As part of a widespread sales promotion programme of the its products, such as non-fat and sugar-free milk, set yogurt, milk products in different flavours would be made available at railway stations, main bus terminals, schools and shops, the MILCO Chairman said.
