SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithreepala Sirisena yesterday claimed that the UPFA had given nominations only to two sons of government ministers to contest the forthcoming provincial councils elections, following an assurance given by those ministers that they would not contest next general election.
Addressing the weekly media briefing at Mahaweli Centre, Colombo, he said that Minister of National Heritage Dr. Jagath Balasuriya and Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs deputy Minister M. K. D. S. Gunawardena would not contest the next parliamentary polls therefore their sons allowed to contest the provincial council polls on the UPFA ticket.
Minister Sirisena was responding to the JVP s claim that 23 relatives of ruling party politicians were contesting the forthcoming provincial council election on the UPFA ticket.
`Both ministers handed over written assurances,` he said.
Minister Sirisena said that other relatives of ruling coalition politicians, who were in the fray, were former provincial council members or those in active politics for a long time.
Answering a query, he justified giving nominations to the next generation of relatives of politicians to contest the elections.
`What is wrong with sons and daughter of ministers entering politics?,` he asked.
He noted that however, their coalition had given a chance to novices to contest the forthcoming provincial council elections.
UPFA General Secretary minister Susil Premajayantha, National Languages and Social Integration minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Child Development and Women s Affairs deputy minister M. L. A. M. Hisbullah also attended the beefing.
