The Sri Lankan government has allocated over 3.5 billion rupees to provide relief to the farmers affected by the prolonged drought in the North Central Province.
Responding to a question raised by JVP parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake in the House today, Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has said that the government has allocated 3.66 billion rupees to compensate the farmers for their crops damaged by the drought.
The President has appointed a committee comprising the secretaries of the Finance, Agriculture and Agrarian Services Ministries to formulate the compensation to the farmers.
According to the Minister, about 36,000 hectares of cultivated lands have been damaged by the prevailing drought.
The government has suspended the farmers` repayments of agri loan installments and provided many subsidies including free seed paddy for the next season.
