Some 30 people were bitten by a dog said to be suffering from rabies and admitted to Vavuniya Hospital on Wednesday. The dog had caused havoc in Vavuniya town last afternoon by biting people indiscriminately.

It was ultimately caught by the people in the area last evening and handed over to the police. Police had handed it over to health officers who had confirmed that the dog was suffering from rabies.

Six beggars charged with begging and obstructing pedestrians in Kollupitiya were fined Rs.10 each and severely warned by a Colombo Court yesterday.

The accused Kumari Hettiarachchi, Sudath Silva, Welu Allen Mel, Lilly Kumari, Welu Ganeshan and Fathima Riyana were produced in Court by the Kollupitiya police. They said the accused had committed an offence under section 3(1) of the Vagrants Ordinance.
