Sri Lanka Postal Department to suspend age-old telegram services

Tuesday, 17 July 2012 - 3:27 PM SL Time

July 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Posts Jeewan Kumaratunga says that the Postal Department has decided to suspend the age-old telegram service soon.

The Minister says the telegram service has become very unpopular and a costly service and is mainly used by the public employees to inform urgent leave officially.

However, the government is expected to introduce an alternative to the telegram service.

Earlier telegrams were used for urgent messages but due to development in telecommunication, it was replaced by fax, SMS and email etc.

Around 1,800 employees that are engaged in handling telegrams are to be given other duties in the Postal Department.

The end of an interesting aera. And now we have Skype free of charge and you can see the person at the other end of the world!

Must admit that I was surprised to read this article, as I thought this service no longer existed for quite some time.
Note on the following link there is a picture of the very last telegram sent in Switzerland April 30, 2001, when the service was discontinued.

Sri Lanka could be one of the last country to do it.

the telex was invented much later but it extincted way ahead of telegrams soon after fax machines came into existence.

the fax machines also becoming extinct due to emails.

most predicted house phones (POTS) would become extinct decades ago. Somehow it still survives against all the odds, surprisingly.

That s right. One reason is certainly the significant progress made in this field, such as:
Mobility
ISDN
Multifunctionality (SMS, Fax, Copies etc.)
Waterproof devices (industrial environment)
Telealarm
and other special devices
