Sri Lanka Police Crime Statistics

Sunday, 15 July 2012 - 4:29 PM SL Time

Some interesting visualisations of Police Statistics here: http://srilankapolicestatistics.wordpress.com/

If anyone was interested. I was quite surprised to find out Nugegoda is one of the worst places!

Always have to be careful with statistics.
If for example the Nugegoda police team would be the most efficient, this could be translated as being a very criminal area for the guy who just looks at the figures.

The stats are a bit shabby, but it's better than nothing, and the fact that they are freely available online, is a good start.

We can see that a lot of improvements can be made in regards to how they collect these stats, what they collect and ultimately how they present what they collect. If these things are done better, we can see where we can improve. I hope someone is doing that at the Police.

doesnt the same apply for the country as a whole, when people say at present the crime rate has gone up!

agree with you. Same has happend to Sweden, it got labelled as the place for most suicides just 'cos it was keeping more detailed statistics if I remember correctly.

also it looks like only the number of crimes, obviously more crowded places (just one factor) like Nugegoda will have higher number of crimes compared to Nikaveratiya or Killinochchi

BS or not, we should work with what we have. That's the path to making things better. Everyone can read newspapers and be informed, but to collect everything in one place to get a birds eye view of what is going on, will make us better informed, to make better decisions, so eventually we can see how to make crime less. Even now people are talking about the reasons behind why Nugegoda might have more crime, there you go right there. That's information. What kind of conclusions can we come to with this information to make things better? In fact what is BS is reading the newspapers and not doing anything about it and forgetting it all with the next issue. What's the use of that?

How am I talking like a politician? I'm just interested in seeing what I can find through the stats that are available, regardless if they are correct or complete.

lol , this alone tells you about the statistics

Really Mr Amigo, what's your problem? I'm merely showing what the stats that are there say.
