Accused sentenced to death

A two judge Bench of the Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced to death the accused in the Royal Park murder case, Shramantha Jude Anthony Jayamaha, dismissing his appeal filed against the High Court verdict that imposed a 12 - year term of imprisonment and a Rs 50,000 fine.
The accused was found guilty by the High Court of the murder of fashion student Yvonne Johanneson in 2005.
The Bench set aside the sentence of 12 years imprisonment and fine of Rs 50,000 imposed earlier by the High Court in the Royal Park murder case before passing the death sentence on the accused appellant.
The Bench comprised Justice Ranjith Silva and Justice H Nalin J Perera.
Before the sentence was passed, the Bench queried from the accused appellant whether he has anything to say to which he remained impassive. Observing the accused appellant had nothing to say and remained silent, Justice Silva expressed the sentiment I feel sorry for him before pronouncing the death sentence to be carried out at a date the President decides upon.
Additional Solicitor General Jayantha Jayasuriya and Deputy Solicitor General Vijith Malalgoda along with Senior State Counsel Haripriya Jayasuriya appeared for the Attorney General.
Anil Silva PC appeared for the accused appellant. Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Media Unit issuing a release on the verdict observed this was the first instance where the Attorney General had filed an appeal against a sentence considered too lenient.
Yesterday s Supreme Court decision also reinforces the fact that criminals will not be given any leeway by the law.

Only in the ' News Papers' judgement issued. Let the judgement carry out by 'Operation'. Otherwise it will be another 'Black Magic' of the government. |

| Oh i do hope the sentence is carried out - the children of wealthy families have to realise the laws equally apply to them . A spoilt child turned into a spoilt killer - from what i have read of this sad affair wasnt his mother trying to pervert the course of justice also -I look forward to seeing the post that the case is now closed !! |

| This type of Young Children going wild because of 'Foolishness' of the 'Rich Parents' and 'Un Controlled' open economy of this country. If the government cut down unnessery foolish expenditure and invest that money to develop the standerd of 'Public Schools' all over the island, one hand country can minimise the expenditure of maintaining 'Sophisticated' prisons, and close down uncontrolled 'International Schools' where foolosh rich parent's young children attending with out proper 'Supervision'.Government cannot simply wash their hands saying 'No Money' to develop schools. If they have money to make 'Cricket Stadiums', 'Car Raceing Tracks', 'Foolish Useless Henchmen International Trips', why cannot they think about 'Country Citizens Requirements' first.It is the Government's duty to upgrade the country education to make 'Civilized Citizens'. |
