The government, writhing under heavy flak over the ever increasing crime rate, has sought to make a molehill out of a mountain . There has been no such rise in the incidence of crime and the media are blowing the situation out of proportion, it claims. People are the best judges. They are aware that it is thanks to the media that the government has woken up and taken notice of people s grave concern about their children s safety. Protests against child abuse are gathering momentum and this time around the government will not be able to bluff its way out of the problem. It will have to grasp the nettle hopefully.

Some ministers have attributed crimes against children to flaws in the legal system and the absence of deterrent punishment among other things. One of them is said to have even proposed the implementation of death penalty as a way out. Yes, drastic action is called for. There is no reason why the ruling politicians, who condone extrajudicial killings and protect criminals who gun down their rivals, cannot bring themselves to endorse judicial executions at least where the monsters convicted of harming the voiceless children are concerned.

What drives most people to crime is the sense of being able to harm others without being harmed or found out. Hanging is sure to act as an effective deterrent to would-be offenders. But, the government under pressure to implement the existing laws and weed out criminal elements in its ranks is apparently trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the public by pretending to consider the implementation of the capital punishment as an option. It has invited applications for the post of executioner at the Welikada Prison! That post could not have fallen vacant all of a sudden at this particular juncture the government announcement to that effect has all the trappings of a political gimmick, we reckon. For, it gives the impression to the na ve that the government is going to hang criminals at long last!

What is needed immediately is to implement the laws that are already available to combat crime until tougher ones are made. The present culture of impunity should be done away with urgently and the rule of law restored with criminals arrested, tried and convicted expeditiously. The responsibility for all this lies with the government.

A UPFA politician has been arrested for raping an underage girl in the South. His criminal track record must have been known to those who nominated him for the last Local Government polls. The blame for fielding him should be pinned on the SLFP leaders. It is hoped that the government will not try to pervert the course of justice to let the monster off the hook in a bid to save its face.

Former Army Chief Gen. Sarath Fonseka has called for an Arab Spring-style uprising in this country to oust the government. He has also offered to lead it, according to a Daily Telegraph dispatch we published yesterday. There is no need for him to exert himself, one may argue. At the rate the government and its pet criminals are trying people`s patience, a leaderless revolt may erupt before long.

The last few days have seen concerned parents taking to the streets in their numbers in protest against child abuse, calling on the government to take action to ensure the safety of their sons and daughters. Let the government be warned that their desperation knows no bounds they may resort to anything, heedless of the consequences of their action, to protect their precious children.

I think, Mr. Hudson Samarasinghe is making some good comments regarding sensitive political issues in sri Lanka.

It is good newspapers making a fuss over these crimes particularly child abuse. I am wondering why they were silent about that earlier.

For example, a 13 year old should not be considered an adult. She is just a CLUELESS - CHILD. TanGALLE CASE IS ABSURD. News papers also should publicize the punishements given to these criminals. Itis good criminal - cheevaradharins, criminal politicians from the provincial councils are getting caught.

It looks that Police is not interested in solving crimes and making the country safe for people. I can not understand why they don't understand that they are doing a VERY IMPORTANT SERVICE FOR THE SOCIETY. I heard, that Defence Secretary had to ask police to arrest some of the habitual criminals (those who have aliases). If the Police needs higher up orders to do their job, once a influential Secretary is gone, police will stop doing their job. Police needs to follow the system and that makes the country safe and not when they get the orders from higher up. ITlooks they are lazy and do not have any initiative to do their service.

Again, police accepts that some police officials are not doing their job. that is why JULAMPITIYE AMARE was not arrested when he had so many warrents.

The LACK OF INITIATIVE IN THE WORK PLACE can be solved if the job security became a thing in the past. That is what Sri Lankans are asking for.

In Sri Lanka the Police is not for the 'VERY IMPORTANT SERVICE FOR THE SOCIETY'. They are the ruling party politicians' 'official uniformed thugs' doing suppressive and oppresive services for the benefit of politicians.

Proves my point. They 'act' only on orders of politicians or those having absolute political power.

There is an accronym for the word POLICE and that is
Politiness
Orderliness
Loyalty
Intergrity
Courtesy
Efficiency

This is what is seen in most of those in the Police service in many countries. However in Sri Lanka the accronym is different and what is depicted in many of those in the Sri Lanka police is

Politicised
Obnoxious
Lethargic
Inefficient
Corrupt
Errant

the present unpleasant culture was created and maintained by the present government. killing and raping to be heard almost every day at large. if one needs to live in Sri lanka he should either live like a gangster or like a pimp. i believe most of them lives like pimps. it has come to the level that one must provide their own security and post-mortam will be done by the police. i have many personal experience when i uses to drive to work and back. i also have experienced with some of the high ranked police officers misuse the power. i was privileged with self defense and knowledge to handle a situation even though it was inside the office of the OIC. you can imagine the fate of those who are speech less and helpless.

At the rate the government and its pet criminals are trying people's patience, a leaderless revolt may erupt before long.

i don't believe that any civilian will be strong enough to stand against the government. i wish one must do that now or never.
