France, Germany Mark Postwar Reconciliation Amid Divisions
by Lisa Bryant

PARIS France and Germany briefly patched up their differences over the eurozone crisis, as their leaders met in the northern French town of Reims to mark the 50th anniversary of their post-war reconciliation.

Standing outside the 800-year-old Reims Cathedral on a rainy Sunday, French President Francois Hollande welcomed German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He used soaring words to describe the post-war reconciliation of Europe`s two historic foes. It was realized at this same cathedral in 1962 by their predecessors - France`s Charles de Gaulle and Germany`s Konrad Adenauer.

Hollande said de Gaulle and Adenauer were lucid enough to look beyond centuries of warfare at what the nations had jointly achieved. And audacious enough to imagine a common future after so much pain and anger.

The reconciliation between France and Germany laid the foundations for the European Union.

In brief remarks at the Reims cathedral, both Hollande and Merkel spoke about the challenges ahead for Europe.

Hollande said the eurozone crisis offers the EU a chance to make a new start. He expressed confidence the 27-member bloc will be able to reconcile economic and social progress, competitiveness with solidarity, and national sovereignty with EU membership.

But Merkel described the EU`s shortfalls, noting it has yet to realize a full economic and monetary union. She called it a Herculean task but said Europe is up to the job - and will emerge stronger than ever.

France and Germany have been the motor driving the EU for decades. Today, Hollande and Merkel are still crafting their new relationship. Underscoring its importance, Hollande visited Merkel in May, hours after being sworn into office.

But the two leaders are sharply divided over the prescriptions for fixing the eurozone crisis. Hollande is emphasizing growth. He has struck new alliances with his Spanish and Italian counterparts. Merkel is a budget stickler. She is also skeptical about pooling EU debt in the form of eurobonds, which Hollande supports.

Old foes mark 50 years of post-war reconciliation

By News Wires the 08/07/2012 - 11:11

France and Germany s leaders met in Reims in northern France Sunday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the two countries post-war reconciliation. The meeting was marred however, by news of the desecration of German war graves.

AFP - France and Germany marked 50 years of reconciliation Sunday but the desecration of German war graves marred a meeting of their leaders that could ease tensions on tackling the euro debt crisis.

The vandalism of the graves of 51 German soldiers killed during World War I on the eve of the highly symbolic meeting cast a shadow over the ceremony in Reims in northern France, a region scarred from centuries of war with Germany.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande arrived at the Rheims cathedral, a UNESCO world heritage side extensively damaged by German bombing during World War I, for the event.

They were to unveil a plaque in German commemorating the 'Mass for peace' before visiting an exhibition in the nearby Tau palace, also a heritage site, before making separate addresses.

The post-war reconciliation, symbolically achieved in 1962 by then French president Charles de Gaulle and former chancellor Konrad Adenauer, was a milestone, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said earlier.

The pair had shown 'courage and foresight' and had swept aside the doubts of many, Merkel said, adding it was 'an essential step on the road for a reunited Europe and that is why France and Germany work together.'

France and Germany, the eurozone's top economies, have worked closely in recent years as they scramble to solve the debt crisis hammering the single currency.

Observers are watching with interest to see how the relationship develops between the new French president, a centre-left advocate of growth, and Merkel, a centre-right defender of austerity.

The two have locked horns on resolving the crisis with Hollande advocating more spending to boost growth -- a position winning over more adherents in Europe -- while Merkel touts serious belt-tightening.

A major irritant is over a European agreement to create a banking regulator.

Germany seems willing to forsake a significant amount of national sovereignty for a strong euro currency. But France wants more teeth for the leader of the Eurogroup -- an informal body comprising the 17 nations using the euro.

Hollande, in an interview with the French newspaper L'Union Saturday, said it was important for the two countries to work together with other member states to tackle the crisis.

On the eve of the watershed ceremony in Reims, the graves of 51 World War I German soldiers were founded desecrated at a military cemetery some 40 kilometres (25 miles) east of the city.

A local prosecutor said the grave markers had probably been kicked out at the Saint-Etienne-a-Arnes cemetery, which contains the graves of some 12,000 World War I soldiers -- the majority of them German.

French Interior Minister Manuel Valls strongly condemned the vandalism saying: 'An enquiry is under way and all means are being employed to find those responsible for this terrible desecration.'

According to initial information, the wooden crosses had been pulled up and some used for a camp fire. Several beer bottles were found nearby.

It was not immediately possible to say whether this was a 'determined action' or just the work of 'irresponsible people', a spokesman at the local prefecture said, adding there were no signs of any political message.

'This is a lowly act, it's unwarranted and stupid violence,' Junior European Affairs Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told AFP on Sunday. 'On this highly symbolic day, one cannot but be deeply shocked.'

Reims was occupied by the Prussians in 1870, devastated by bombings during World War I, and the city where on May 7, 1945, US general Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Allies received the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht.

Sri Lankan war had different interest groups.

so, depending on the group - Tamils, India, Vatican and the europe, USA - reconciliation means a different thing.

IF Tamils are given land rights - church will have vatican in Wanni and USA will have army camps there. Then tamils use tribalism to keep away Muslims and Sinhalas and to remove every Army and Navy camp in there.

Police power decentralized means, JVP can train their own army and LTTE can train their own army.

Kaush,

Just for your information there is no absolute gauge to measure how 'civilized' a given society to be labelled as 'uncivilized'. Even if there is a gauge, any sensible person would not say that Sri Lankans are 'uncivilized' if he has some knowledge of world history. Sri Lankans never invaded any other country killing thousands to steal wealth, gems, oil nor sent millions to gas chambers nor did use slaves for the benefit of its people. Since you live in UK, you may feel that Sri Lankans are 'uncivilized', and that feeling is natural for many recent immigrants. But the hard truth is that even today the 'civilized' behavior of most of those developed western countries exists only at the toilet or queue. They talk about 'uncivilized' behavior of other countries like non use of toilet paper, but underneath, they behave like savages killing thousands innocent people all over the world for financial gains. So I feel sorry for your comment.

Though I do not agree with the rowdy behavior of some Sri Lankans, compared to what those 'civilized' thugs of western countries do, it is nothing.

Now! Now: don't get on Kaush's case. He has nothing but himself to measure Sri Lankan society by. Poor soul.
