A new scandal threatens to engulf the Catholic Church and this time the focus is money. Senior Vatican officials are battling over the future of the Vatican bank. While some would like total transparency, dubious transactions from the past and present could harm the Church's image.

Ten years ago, the Roman Catholic sex abuse scandal dominated the headlines with horrific stories of priests preying on vulnerable youths and a church hierarchy more concerned with protecting clergy instead of kids.

Now, it s back. A Philadelphia jury is deliberating whether, for the first time, a high-ranking church official will be held criminally accountable.

As the reputation of the Catholic Church sinks further into the mire with the latest allegations of sex abuse and cover-up, it is worth raising again the subject of priestly celibacy.

Celibacy cuts to the heart of what is wrong with the church - along with its homophobia and misogyny.

Father F, a focus of the Four Corners expose this week, admitted to interfering with five boys aged 10 and 11. He forced two of them to have oral sex regularly over a year, according to a letter written by one of the three priests who interviewed him in 1992.

But understandably overlooked in the outrage over the alleged paedophilia and cover-up is that Father F also admitted to two affairs with young women. This is also a grave offence in the church's eye. For most people, it is the rank hypocrisy that is offensive.

I think, all the problems in Sri Lanka are because of the Catholic church.

A close relative of the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman who is currently in remand priosn in connection with the alleged rape of a minor was arrested yesterday for the same offence.

The man was picked up while attempting to reach a lawyer at the main Matara town earlier yesterday, police said.

According to police the suspect along with the PS Chairman, who is his brother-in-law had together repeatedly raped the minor.
