Sri Lanka main opposition website administrator surrenders to court

Ruwan Ferdinands, the coordinating secretary of Sri Lanka major opposition United National Party (UNP) media chief parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera, surrendered to the court today.
Ferdinands surrendered to Colombo Additional Magistrate Court over the case related to the Sri Lanka Mirror and Sri Lanka X News websites.
However, the Additional Magistrate Prasanna Alwis rejected to accept his surrender since the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the court that he was not named as a suspect in the raid of the websites.
The CID requested to record a statement from Ferdinandez and the Additional Magistrate granted permission to record it on July 16. The magistrate said Ferdinands could accompany a lawyer and ordered the CID to obtain the statement in a manner that does not breach his fundamental rights.
CID recently raided the offices of the Sri Lanka Mirror and Sri Lanka X News websites and arrested nine personnel including the journalists who were accused of misleading the public by publishing false information regarding the government and the President.
Ferdinands is a managing editor of the two websites. He claimed that his house was searched by CID in his absence.
Editor of Sri Lanka Mirror Kelum Shivantha and the seven other suspects, who have been released on bail, also appeared at the hearing.
The magistrate postponed the case until July 20. Written submissions on behalf of the suspects will be due on that date.
