Sri Lanka`s Mineral Sand Corporation in Pulmoddai launched a protest demonstration today against an alleged attempt by the government to hand over the mineral sand ore to a private company in China.
The protesters rallied before the premises of Mineral Sand Corporation at Pulmoddai in the Eastern Province and protested the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Resources and Enterprises Development Willie Gamage who had arrived in Pulmoddai today.
However, the Secretary Gamage told a local radio that the employees had misunderstood a statement made by him. He said that he emphasized the need of utilizing the collected deposits of mineral sand and releasing the land for other development purposes.
The supply of mineral sands has come to a standstill due to the strike, sources claimed.
In a report yesterday, the official said that another mineral sand mine had been discovered from Pulmoddai.
The Corporation currently exports mineral sand to Russia, Japan, US and the UK and is to venture into value added export products.
