Veddas are being politicized.
The Chief of the Adiwasi (Veddah) clan of Pollebedda in Mahaoya off Mahiyangana T. B. Goba laments over the disappearance of the statue of the Buddha, which was a gift to villagers over half a century ago by the late leaders Dudley Senanayake and J. R. Jayewardene.
Veddah leader T. B. Goba in a letter addressed to President Mahinda Rajapaksa has requested that action be taken to recover the lost marble image which was about 15 kilogrammes and 18 inches in height.
A copy of the letter addressed to President Rajapaksa was given to the former Principal of Pollebedda Vidyalaya P. Samaranayake and Secretary of the Cooperative Employees Union R. Wijesinghe when they visited the community recently.
The letter dated May 17 has told President Rajapaksa that the Buddha image was stolen by someone about a year ago.
Goba has said in the letter that after Dr. Spittel took his clan out of the jungle and settled them in the village J. R. Jayewardene, Dudley Senanayake and Venerable Narada Thera of Vajirarama visited them. They gifted the Buddha image to perform religious rites. The statue was placed in the Shrine room of the village.
Veddha leader has requested President Rajapaksa to take steps to recover the statue.
