| | Indian Angel Network to back Sri Lankan startups Monday, 25 June 2012 - 10:57 AM SL Time | | | Angel group teams up with Blue Ocean Ventures to spread wings
Indian Angel Network (IAN) has partnered with Blue Ocean Ventures to expand to Sri Lanka. The angel-funding group plans to invest up to Rs 10 crore in the country`s startups.
While IAN has overseas investors and has funded companies in foreign countries, it has for the first time led an international partnership to invest and mentor entrepreneurs abroad. It co-founded the Venture Engine business plan contest in Sri Lanka along with Blue Ocean Ventures to shortlist worthy startups. The venture attracted 70 plans and nine companies came out at the top. IAN looks at investing in five companies, said Padmaja Ruparel, president of IAN.
The Venture Engine platform would provide startups with post-investment support as well. The Sri Lankan firms will be able to access the large Indian market and grow their companies at a much faster pace, Ruparel added. Angel funding normally ranges from a few lakh rupees to a few crores. Early-stage investors don the role of mentors to help startups take their baby steps. Ideally, their handholding continues to the point where the company`s operations have stabilised and are ready to scale. It takes at least the initial two years to be ready to find other investors including venture capitalists.
Rehan Yar Khan, board member of IAN, said, This is the first ever international initiative of an angel network in India to foster innovation and entreprene ur s hip am on gst the budding Sri Lankan start ups. We are very proud of expanding our horizon by taking a step forward in the intercontinental industry. Sri Lanka is slowly evolving as a hub for smaller companies who are using their expertise to start innovative products and services. Venture Engine was initiated to respond to the lack of seed-stage capital for start-ups in Sri Lanka. IAN endeavours to improve and scale up the start-up landscape in Sri Lanka by providing an opportunity to execute their ideas with quality mentorship.
IAN is Asia`s largest business early-stage investors network of over 200 business angels funding startups. |

Here, I heard, One Harvard passed out Indian engineer was developing a recyclable battery which can be used for electric cars.
I was thinking why he did not do that in India as the cost of development would be cheaper in India as well as threats of stealing business secrets also would be low. |

I think, Sri Lanka is in the right track. Because of the influence of state politics over the decision making of the Indian central govt, Sri Lanka, should not align completely with India. That won't work for Sri Lanka. |

Pamporis,
The Black Widows have made the news, this time all for the right reasons!!.
The treatment of widows is worse in the north and in different areas such as West Bengal, which is among the harshest. Thousands of poor women retreat after their husbands die to ashrams in Vrindavan, a holy Hindu city between Delhi and Agra, and to Varanasi, the sacred Hindu city on the Ganges, where they are frequently treated abominably without adequate shelter and food (see this NDTV video). In 2000, when Deepa Mehta, a well known film maker, planned to record the widows plight in Vrindavan and Varanasi, radical political activists who did not want their traditions publicized or criticised drove her out and she made the film three years later in Sri Lanka

Yea, but they still haven't made UN panel reports on war crimes, UNHRC resolutions and haven't made India's foreign minister running from capitals to capitals with explanations !
And they certainly haven't made hundreds of thousands of Indian refugees in Sri Lankan refugees camps!

I agree. With some sustained guidance, Sri Lanka will get there. |
