This is an unnecessary thing .....keep on offering.....no point..:-((
The Treasury has called applications from public servants, including those attached to the provincial councils desirous of ordering duty free vehicles. About 1,000 public servants are expected to benefit from this move.
Well informed sources told The Island that the Treasury had given them an opportunity to import a vehicle each duty free up to a CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) value of $ 25,000. They have been also allowed to import a vehicle exceeding the limit of CIF value of $ 25,000 provided the amount in excess is dutiable.
Sources revealed that this was to help those wanting to import a state of the art BMW with a minimum price of $ 30,000. Asked whether the government had a system in place to thwart abuse of duty free permits, sources alleged that there would never be such a mechanism as long as those responsible for monitoring the process, too, were beneficiaries of the much abused permit system. The going price of a duty free permit was now Rs. 1.5 mn.
More permits were being issued in spite of the government s vow to curb vehicle imports to save foreign exchange and tackle congestion on roads.
