Sri Lanka has taken necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the Sri Lankan politicians and public officials visiting India, the Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs Karunathilaka Amunugama has said.
The Secretary`s assertion comes in the wake of the recent incident where the Minister of Minor Export Crop Promotion Reginald Cooray had to cancel an official visit and return to country after Tamil Nadu police warned him of a protest planned by the pro-LTTE groups in the Indian state.
The Indian government has taken special measures after enlightening about some incidents happened during visits to India by Sri Lankan elites, the Secretary, participating in a programme of the state-run radio SLBC, has said.
Amunugama has said that the government will inform the Indian External Affairs Ministry when Sri Lankan elites tour in India.
Also, a special programme will be implemented to provide security for devotees paying homage at the religious sites in India, the Secretary has said.
Following the cancellation of Cooray`s visit, the main opposition United National Party (UNP), pointing out that providing security to the Minister was India`s duty, asked the Speaker of parliament Chamal Rajapaksa to officially protest the incident to Indian High Commissioner in Colombo
