The Petroleum Industries Ministry of Sri Lanka is looking at introducing a new fuel saving programme in the country.
Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha has said that there is close to 10 percent wastage of fuel during the transportation, storage and pumping of fuel.
These losses, he has said, had to be borne by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).
The Minister has noted that the fuel wastage levels recorded in Sri Lanka were higher than in other countries.
He has noted that filling station attendants as well as vehicle drivers need to be made aware of fuel wastage and the need to save it.
According to Premajayantha, the fuel saving programme would be launched by an island wide school essay competition and a motor car rally called the Economy Rally would be organized as well.
Awareness programs on fuel saving would also be organized at district level.
These programs would be launched to coincide with the CPC`s 50th anniversary celebrations.
