The presidential pardon given to former Army chief Sarath Fonseka is conditional, said attorney general Eva Wanasundara,
He will not be able to contest elections for seven years.
However, Mr. Fonseka has the voting rights, said the AG.
Since the president has pardoned the ex-Army chief for the prison term he was to serve, he is considered as a person who has served a jail term, she said.
Furthermore, there is a court case pending in connection with his having harboured Army deservers, the AG noted.
