President Mahinda Rajapaksa claims that defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is urging him to free imprisoned former Army chief Sarath Fonseka.
It was the defence secretary who also wanted Mr. Fonseka appointed the commander of the Army, the president told heads of media institutions at a meeting at Temple Trees yesterday (May 15).
The defence secretary, who was also present on the occasion, did not make any response to the president s claim.
The president said, despite his unwillingness, the defence secretary had wanted to appoint Mr. Fonseka to succeed the then Army chief Shantha Kottegoda in 2005.
