Wick!
Ane Yako Umba Danna Tamil.
You are a racist. You are a criminal operating serious criminals from Australia.
You critize everyone saying even Sinhalese are Kallathoni.
I know personally who you are.
You are a man with a criminal record in Sri Lanka.
You escaped to Australia as a refugee by a boat from Negambo beach.
Now you are living in Australia illegally.
I can prove all these with evidence.
If I want I can report about you to the Australian Police Department.

Thivya........... Nope.... it is a Hindu tradition.
There are things lot common between Buddhism & Hindunism.
These are things adapted and tempered through ages.
Samanj,
It is not a tradition of Hinduism but an exclusively Tamil tradition and we have literary evidence to prove that. Who do you think the so called 'Hindus' the Sinhalese have had unbroken connections from the dawn of history are? They are none other than Tamils. Besides you are still calling these decorative structures with TAMIL WORDS like Pandal and Thorana(m). These are the unique traditions of Tamils, since the vast majority of Tamils are Hindus all the Tamil traditions are also absorbed into Tamil Saivaism and may have been borrowed by other non Tamil Hindus in India as well.
Deep down in the Sinhala psyche, there has always been the nagging doubt about their real origin, despite all their brave talk about their Aryan origin and their presence in the island, before the Dravidian Tamils. So they will vehemently deny anything related to Tamils.

Pandol is a tamil word. So is thorana. How about paka?
Dewey,
I don't know but it might be a Portuguese word your ancestors borrowed from some drunken Portuguese Sailor.

Wesak is for buddhists, not for sinhala buddhists
They mixed it up.
Wesak is abused by Taliban Buddhists in Sri Lanka...!
It is time that real Buddhists, possibly from India, Thai, Myanmar, Japan, deploy forces to fight the Taliban Buddhists and protect the Buddhism! |

Wick,
In Singhala we do not call it a PANDAL , we call it THORANA.
Thorana also incidentally from the Tamil word 'thoranam'.
Don't worry about the origin, in nature some thing has to be older than the other and no one can do about that. And also things have to originate from something and evolve from something. That is the truth about evolution.
Did we have kalissama at the outset?
Neck tie at the outset?
Paang at the outset?
So we should not worry about whether the egg came first or the hen came first.
But on a so-called sacred day for Buddist it is good for them in particular to be patient and kind and moderate.
As a piece of art, the lion in this Pandal (thorana)is a bit frightening and threatening and challenges what Buddha strived for!

Scary looking lion picture is not appropriate for this pandol. I dont understand what is wrong with our people. Pandol is supposed to tell you a buddhist story. Vesak got nothing to do with sinhala. Tiny buddha statue and huge roaring lion.
Got my answer, thanx Dewe
Amen to that.
