Sri lankans do not know the value of using fresh milk, they always go for milk powder, but in Australia you could hardly find any milk power in the super market.
Sri Lankans know value of fresh milk. But it is more expensive than imported powdered milk. Simply they can't afford. SO you will not find UHT fresh milk packets in grocery shops in Sri Lanka like you find in Australia.
This article has failed to mention that the goal of imposing tax on imported milk power is to promote consumption of local milk especially liquid milk.
typical deshapremi argument. :)
So the milk price increase is not due to rupee depreciation and price increase in international markets. ::)) |

UHT fresh milk is available in most local grocery stores, but the the cost is higher and you need refrigeration to keep it fresh after opening. those might be the reasons to its low popularity.

Just a few days ago, some milk collectors (not the farmers) threw milk - thousands of gallons or more - on the road. IT looks like some businessmen tried to show farmers that there is a glut of production and discourage farmers. Because of that govt has to cut down milk powder imports.
I think later govt declared that milk power imports are stopped except for the infants' formulae. |

UHT milk needs refrigerator facilites and it is not truley fresh. Sri Lanka has fresh and unpasturized milk and directly form the farmer. |

Increasing TAXES for Cooking Gases cannot be understood except for politics.
MAy be motore vehicles owners are mostly UPFA and UNP voters.
Govt did not increase the price of petrol or Diesal instead increased the price of cooking gas BECAUSE that may become a political issue.
Actually, in North America NAtural Gas prices have gone down all over the continent. The decrease is about 50% - 70%. |
