The Sri Lanka Police have arrested five persons who have allegedly stolen tsunami warning equipment.

The police arrested the five suspects from Matara and have recovered the stolen equipment that included a buoy used to receive weather information and tsunami alerts.

According to the police the suspects are residents of Devinuwara. They are to be produced before the court.

The equipment has been stolen last month and the police have been investigating into the incident since then.

Local authorities have taken many precautionary measures to minimize the impact on lives during a tsunami situation.

Sri Lanka last week faced a tsunami warning following an 8.7 earthquake in Sumatra.
