But what MR.R did was, he used borrowed money with higher interest rates for white elephant(to keep his name) projects like New seaport, new airport......etc. Do Srilanka really need these projects right now?

i am happy to see some one is commenting with facts that has real impact. i am totally with you on this. my thinking and the rest of the country mans thinking should be in the same direction. our fellow citizens should decide from now onward what needs to be done. other wise this country will suffer to keep few 100s of members happy and prosper at a cost of rest of the citizens in the country.

Rather than dig into old

They are golden oldies to show how true your posts are...

previous posting if I was wrong?

Do you think a country can just rely on IMF loan to develop the country? even though the interest rates are low they have conditions too. I am glad Sri lanka has other options.

It is up to the elected government to decide what developments needed to and when to be done. The people evaluate the development and vote accordingly in future elections.

The highway development was one of the best thing happened to SL. We should not forget Colombo cleaning project under took by GOTA.
Down south is the biggest tourism hub in SL and it is commercially viable to have a International Air Port so the tourists have the option of flying direct to DS. Most of the tourists do not want to travel more than 1 hour to their hotels after having a 10 hour flight. It was one of the biggest down faults in our tourism industry. But I am sure with the new airport it will be sorted.
The high cost of living is just not only effected to the people in Sri Lanka. I am sure Sri Lankans are happier than some homeless people who live in Greece of Spain at the moment.
So Sri Lankans are not stupid to be fooled by fake Eastern Europeans and they know what's happening around the world too.

The highway development was one of the best thing happened to SL.

its the best thing happened to sri lanka but not at the correct time and correct way. the expenditure and the revenue generation cannot be justify with the cost involved and the consequences the country faces due to that. it was not a real need of the day during such time. we first should stand up with two feet before walking. some one who has short term interest will rush in to projects as such developing high ways just to attract a segment of tourists. it should have been kandy colombo if that's the case. haven't sri lanka attracted tourists before the high way. tourism is seasonal and just to entertain some thing that is really happening during the season, should a country spend through the nose. those behind the decision have let the country in to a hell in terms of debts. helpless citizens including unborn have to pay the price just to keep one industry running.

The high cost of living is just not only effected to the people in Sri Lanka. I am sure Sri Lankans are happier than some homeless people who live in Greece of Spain at the moment.

its is not at all comparable. Greece and Spain is a totally a different story. the collapse of the financial system and total mismanagement.i cannot believe some one giving such an example to show a similarity of the purposely made up issue in Sri Lanka due to single handed decisions to bloat some once image. Sri Lankan banking system did not collapse and it will happen soon if the taxing increased at this phase. as exactly what has happened in the places coated.

It is up to the elected government to decide what developments needed to and when to be done.

exactly, elected government ( formed government) will decide how can they increase the size of the wallet.irrespective of the returns from the project and consequences. simply them do not care in your own wards.

The people evaluate the development and vote accordingly in future elections.

every single project in our country is been done with an aim of winning the election. but take my words, this time they were wrong. as you correctly said people have evaluated and waiting for a chance. each and every time change of hands takes place, pne party comes to power ruin the country and take their quota. then the next comes. when will the rest of the citizens live a happy life. i believe not in next 20 years.

Greece, Spain collapsed due to total financial mismanagement. There is no difference. So don't talk rubbish.
whatever people say the highways, Airports are long term investments. It is a mismanagement to borrow money to increase people's wages and feed them like Greece did.

Ben May, Greek economist at think tank Capital Economics, said: 'Their mistake was to go out, borrow money and use it to fund huge wage growth, rather than pay down its already substantial debts.'
Greece went on a spending spree, allowing public sector workers' wages to nearly double over the last decade, while it continued to fund one of the most generous pension systems in the world. Workers when they come to retire usually receive a pension equating to 92 per cent of their pre-retirement salary. As Greece has one of the fastest ageing populations in Europe, the bill to fund these pensions kept on mounting.

I did it to point out the world in general is facing a crisis. It is just not for Sri lanka as some people are trying to point out. Some people killed themself in Greece because they lost their homes, pensions, total savings. Some are going through bis to find food. These are developed countries.

every single project in our country is been done with an aim of winning the election. but take my words, this time they were

If the projects lead to win the elections that what the people want. There is no simple answer than that and that's how the politics work. No political in the world wants to lose power.
Some people even try to betray the country and fellow members of the team to come to power.

KUDU pimpia,

You did not challenge any points which I mentioned earlier other than dig into old septic tanks and blabbering like a chimpanzee.
challenge my previous posting if I was wrong?

Why do not you compare how much money spent for white elephant projects, extravaganzas, ceremonies, commonwealth game trips, 300-400 Ministers and deputies with actual development projects for the country?

The highway development was one of the best thing happened to SL.

Yes, OK say good for the Srilanka.

Hambantota Development Zone, Deep South Sri Lanka

Hambantota Development Zone project launched with Chinese aid amounting to no less than six billion dollars includes a seaport, an airport, oil-refinery. It is expected to cost about US$1 billion and the Chinese are said to be financing more than 85% of the project. While the completion of the first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in three years, the entire project will span not less than next 15 years.

The Southern highway project in Sri Lanka is a 126km-long express highway running from Colombo to Matara on the south coast.

The project was initially estimated to cost $348.75m, but escalated to $741.1m. Construction was started in 2003 and the project was anticipated to be completed by 2010. It has, however, been delayed to mid-2011 as negotiations are ongoing between the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the Export and Import Bank of China, regarding the financing of section four.

Cost US$7-8 million per kilo meter. It's worth to spent so much money for a 'SHOW CASE'?
