The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, one of the most significant cultural events in Sri Lanka followed by a large segment of the population, dawns at 6.58 am on April 13. Astrologically, the Aluth Avurudda symbolises the transition of the Sun from Pisces to Aries.
The Punya Kalaya (Nonagathaya) for religious observances is from 12.56 pm on April 13 to 1.44 am on April 14. One should not engage in any work during this period.
The auspicious time for lighting the hearth for cooking ghee and jaggery mixed milk rice (kiribath) is 7.42 pm on April 13. The hearth should be set facing the south. White and light blue mixed attire is recommended.
The first meal for the New Year should be taken at 10.28 pm on April 13. This traditionally includes starting work and engaging in the first transaction for the New Year. White and blue clothing is recommended. The auspicious time for anointing oil is 7.08 am on April 15. Gold coloured attire is recommended for this ceremony. There will be a national ceremony for anointing oil.
The auspicious time for leaving for work is 6.22 am on Wednesday, April 18.
`Avurudu Nekath Seettuwa`, the traditional document that lists the `neketh` (auspicious times) for the customs to be followed during the upcoming New Year was handed over to President Mahinda Rajapaksa earlier.

Let us wish, for the new year,
let there be no filth on LNP
let members respect each other
This is probably wishful thinking for the bunch who are active. I guess the only defense is a good offense. So watch out.
Happy new year! |

A Sri Lankan MP has demanded that an Indian MPs' delegation, scheduled to visit the island nation for a week from April 16 to assess the resettlement and political process in war-torn areas, meet and talk to Tamils without any mediators.
Indian MP's should talk to Indians.
Sri Lankan Tamils should talk to Sri Lankan MPs.

Speaking at a meeting convened by Madurai Bar Association Madurai yesterday, S Shritharan (Tamil National Alliance), wanted the delegation also to inspect places like Mullivaikal, where final phase of the war against LTTE took place.
What is this guy doing at a Madurai Bar Association? Hanging out with Jayalalitha?
TNA is the problem for peace. They still follow a separatist agenda! |
