Many would have thought it was the end of the road for controversial Minister Mervyn de Silva following his recent public threat to break the legs of those who campaigned against Sri Lanka in Geneva and openly claiming he was the reason behind journalist Poddala Jayantha fleeing the country a few years back, but he was back at his best yesterday, addressing a new year festival at a Dhamma school at Kelaniya.

The Minister of Public Relations who took off to Japan for a holiday possibly to escape the heat created by his controversial comments two weeks ago, addressing a cultural event yesterday morning declared that he was very loyal to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, but if he was not required by the party he would not remain in it even for a second.

While noting that he had faced innumerable problems during the UNP regime, Minister Silva said that the immense development work he had carried out in the electorate, the people and the Buddhist clergy there were well aware of.

Silva, who was one of the few government politicians invited recently to the wedding of Minister Basil Rajapksa s daughter at Colombo Hilton asked what service had been rendered by Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha members to the area. For those who could not work with him honestly for the benefit of the people the door was wide open to leave, he said.

Certain sections of the media was attacking him may be because he was born and brought up in a village and he did not wear a tie and a coat, but people of Kelaniya were with him and he was with the people, the Minister said.
