Head of Sri Lanka Insurance Board, Indrani Sugathadasa is being paid a monthly bribe of Rs. 5 million by Ceylinco Insurance Company, a senior company executive said.

The executive said that Ceylinco Insurance made this monthly payment in order to prevent any action being taken against the irregularities and improper administration methods practiced by the company.

The official further noted that his company had been making this monthly payment to successive heads of the Insurance Board and that the same facility is now being extended to Sugathadasa. He noted that these payment shave been made either monthly or lump sum payment has been made and that he was in possession of relevant documents to prove the transactions.

Sugathadasa was appointed as the head of Sri Lanka Insurance Board after the President removed her as the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Sources from the Board said that the current position held by Sugathadasa was less prominent and therefore new avenues are being looked at to earn some extra money.

Pregnant women who showed higher exposure to common agricultural pesticides had babies with slightly lower birth weights, a study by Canadian and U.S. researchers has found.

Simon Fraser University health sciences professor Bruce Lanphear and his colleagues tested the urine of 306 pregnant women in Cincinnati, Ohio, twice during their pregnancies. They were looking for chemicals that would show the women had been exposed to organophosphate pesticides, which are used to kill insects.

The telltale chemicals, called metabolites, are generated when the body breaks down organophosphates. Organophosphates represented 36 per cent of all insectides used in the U.S. in 2007, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives this week, found that for every 10-fold increase in the concentration of the chemicals found in a pregnant woman's urine, her pregnancy was reduced by half a week and her child's birth weight decreased about 150 grams.
