Prices of essential goods are increasing ahead of the National New Year as a direct result of the depreciation of the rupee, importers said. The warning came as the Central Bank on Friday said inflation increased by 5.5 per cent last month.
Old Moor Street Traders Association President P. Sundaram said the prices of imported food items would now increase as stocks imported earlier were over.
Among the imported commodities, prices of which have already gone up, are big onions, tinned-fish, sugar, dhal and potatoes. In addition, textile and clothes which are normally bought in large quantities during the National New Year have also gone up in price, as also have almost all electronic items.
The Central Bank on Friday said the year-on-year inflation as measured by the Colombo Consumers Price Index (CCPI) computed by the Department of Census and Statistics increased to 5.5 per cent. The Bank said it was mainly due to the huge increases in fuel prices, electricity rates and bus fares.

| In the past all price increases were blamed on Cesspit born eelam terrorism. But now it's the reality to compete with the glooms of world economy. All imported good will remain costly to purchase for those on lower income. Those opposed to the present government goes about protesting, giving media to manipulate islandwide stories, instead of introducing their own remedial measures..:-) |

Those who got free education from SL, having a nice job in the West because of that, are making fun of high prices which poor people (sinhala and tamil alike) have to endure. Pathetic. No sympathy from these SL haters. It is one thing to hate politicians but showing some concern is a duty of these so-called patriots!

Never Ever,
I think that you are not correct. Certainly it is not to insult the unfortunate disadvantaged people of SL.
All these insulting remarks are directed at the ruling family which is responsible for this situation. The family is still trying to live in the name of the war while wasting billions on unnecessary grandiose ideas and plans and only interested in putting up their names in the plaques.
All these insults are not directed at the people. I can assure you at least I don't intend to insult them. |
