The LTTE is now citing the US-sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka, recently adopted in Geneva, to support a major propaganda campaign to coincide with the forthcoming London Olympics.
With various LTTE front organizations exploiting the Geneva resolution to promote separatist sentiments in Sri Lanka, the self-styled Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) has called human rights lovers theworld over to use the London Olympics (July 27 to August 12) to undermine what it calls the genocidal Sri Lankan State.
The London headquartered Amnesty International conducted an anti-Sri Lanka campaign during the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. The AI called off the campaign targeting the Sri Lankan national team at the height of the war in the Eastern Provincein view of Sri Lanka s protests.
Headed by US-based V. Rudrakumaran, a close associate of slain LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, the TGTE was pushing for three key demands, including a referendum on the right of Tamil speaking people living in the Northern and Eastern Provinces for self-determination, GoSL sources said.
Rudrakumaran inaugurated the TGTE at a three-day conference held in May at the National Constitutional Centre, Philadelphia. Tamil sources said that the TGTE, which pursued a separatist agenda wasn t part of the Global Tamil Forum (GTF) or the British Tamil Forum (BTF).The TGTE is also pursuing an international war crimes inquiry on the basis of Sri Lanka s Killing Fields and Sri Lanka s Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished, telecast by UK outfit Channel 4. Responding to a query, a senior GoSL official pointed out that the TGTE s third demand for an international protection mechanism for those Tamil speaking people living in Sri Lanka was an attempt to justify their unsubstantiated claims of systematic human rights violations, though the war ended in May three years ago.
The TGTE recently launched a video calling for non-Tamils to pressure their individual governments to take punitive action against the racist Sri Lankan State. The video emphasized the responsibility on the part of the global community to hold the failed Sri Lankan State accountable. The TGTE thanked the US for moving a resolution in Geneva and 23 other member states of the UNHRC. Rudrakumaran outfit also credited the Channel 4 for contributing to the passage of the Geneva resolution.
Fifteen countries opposed the US resolution, while eight abstained.
External Affairs Ministry sources told The Island that those still pursuing eelam project had been brazenly using mega-international events to target Sri Lanka. Sources pointed out that the LTTE used the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2011) in Perth, Australia and the 19th sessions of the UNHRC to its advantage. Sources said that the Channel 4 had made a desperate bid to sabotage the England cricket tour of Sri Lanka. The Channel targeted one-time Zimbabwean batting great, Andy Flower for accompanying the England team, though he publicly opposed the Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.
