Sri Lanka is developing fast. So, the govt wants to slow down it.

Govt. should give up extravagant projects to stabilize the economy
Rupee expected to slide beyond Rs. 130
March 24, 2012, 6:00 pm

By Hiran H. Senewiratne

Dr Nimal Sandaratne, a leading analyst in economics, says government should undertake infrastructure projects that would bring fast economic benefits. Therefore, it is better to focus on good and economically viable projects that would bring quick benefits for public.

'If any project is important and would positively impact the public at large, the government then should go ahead with it. Apart from that, giving up extravagant projects at this juncture will help the economy to become stable under the current scenario, he told the Sunday Island.

Dr Sandaratne also warned the government that the Rupee would slide beyond Rs 130 for a dollar, if the present depreciation continues. Therefore, now the government should focus on projects that would bring quick returns.

He hinted that certain government projects would take several decades to get economic benefits. With the finical crisis the government will have to incur heavy cost on projects.
