Authoritative officials told The Sunday Island that in line with the rules and procedures of the UNHRC, technical assistance was based on the principal that it could be given only with the consent of the recipient. They insisted that principle was part and parcel of the rules of procedure of the rights council and it would grossly inaccurate to say that India introduced changes to save Sri Lanka.

'We don t deny that India revised the draft at the eleventh hour. What they introduced was what is contained in the rules of procedures of the HRC,' an official.

In a short statement issued on Friday following the passage of the US sponsored resolution at the UNHRC in Geneva, the Tamil National Alliance said it welcomed the passing of the resolution titled ''Promoting Reconciliation and Accountability in Sri Lanka.

''We believe that the Resolution will benefit all Sri Lankans, regardless of ethnicity. We sincerely hope that the Resolution and the clear collective will of the Council will encourage the government to face the future with fortitude and move decisively to protect human rights and take tangible action to advance genuine reconciliation, it said.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa could be looking at LTTE 2.0 a few years down the line if he fails to implement political reforms to achieve ethnic reconciliation without any further loss of time.
