The port is located in Hambantota, one of the lowest per capita income regions in Sri Lanka, and the port will be an important catalyst for major economic development. The total estimated construction cost of Phase 1 of the project is $361 million, out of which 85 percent has been funded by the Ex-Im Bank of China.

So probably You might get an idea Y development is necessary in Hamabantota!

The government, whilst taking into account the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, will do what the Parliament decides, acting Cabinet spokesperson Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said.

Whatever the LLRC report says, we are finally accountable to the parliament, and the recommendations of the parliament are what we will carry out, Abeywardena said during a routine media briefing.

This is why we have proposed a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC), which will be accountable to the parliament as the country s supreme body, he said.

He made these remarks following questions raised by journalists as to why the government is claiming an international conspiracy at play, at a time when the United States is calling for the government to implement the LLRC recommendations.

The US is expected to float a resolution at the ongoing United Nations Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva, which Washington sources say is backed by more than half of the 47 members of the council.

The US is asking us to do what we re going to do anyway, but the issue is if the US pokes its fingers into domestic matters, it would open the floodgates for more actions against the government, he said.
