UN committee bars Sri Lankan general linked to atrocities
Feb 23 (AFP) A top UN peacekeeping committee on Wednesday barred a Sri Lankan general accused of carrying out a military onslaught against civilians. But Major General Shavendra Silva still attended the first meeting Wednesday of a special advisory panel to UN leader Ban Ki-moon. He sat in the room but no other member spoke to him and no documents were given to him, diplomats said.
'Following careful consideration and consultation with other SAG members, the chair, Louise Frechette, has advised Major General Shavendra Silva of Sri Lanka, that his participation is not appropriate or helpful for the purposes of this group. He will not participate in its deliberations,' said a statement released by Frechette.
Frechette is a former UN deputy secretary general and top Canadian diplomat who was named by Ban to chair the committee.
'If Frechette had not acted this panel would just have fallen apart, nobody wanted him on the panel,' said one diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity. |

Even from Asia, India, Bangaledesh and the Paki's had openly stated that SL should fix it.

Even the grounds keeper at UN is more powerful that Banna Kiyana Moon. :)
Can you tell me one thing that Banna Kiyana Moon has done in the last five years that he has been at the top, that shows him as a capable a competent Sec.Gen.
doing or not doing is his and yours problem, but him saying that he doesnt have power to do so is still a valid statement and I dont think you have offered anything to contrary.. :) |

but him saying that he doesnt have power to do so is still a valid statement
Only a valid statment if it was the truth. Based on Pillai's statment and UN's requirement for vetting the candidates for key positions I don't think Bana Kiyana Moon did his job. |

Inner City Press again asked how Ban could, disagreeing with the UN's own High Commissioner on Human Rights, not be consistent and use the 'vetting' system applicable to officials sent from individual member states as peacekeepers to a Senior Adviser on Peacekeeping that emerged from the Asian Group (where, as Inner City Press first reported, there was no election, with Nepal and Saudi Arabia being convinced to stand down).
Nesirky argued that vetting doesn't apply because 'there is a General Assembly resolution.' But UN Peacekeeping itself is governed by General Assembly as well as Security Council resolutions.
