at present one of the techniques we used in large scale energy storage methods is PUMPED STORAGE. this has been practiced since a long time and there are large number of pumped storage power plant around the world.
Basically this is used when you have a large thermal base.

In a system with a large thermal power plants , pumped storage plants are used to store exess power during off peak times by pumping water up the reservoirs and used during peak hours

In Sri Lankan case Coal power is broken down every other day. Hydro power is only 15% of total power.

How would you pump the water back up other than using expensive thermal energy?

This would be more expensive.

Other countries they use cheap power sources (wind etc) from off -peak times to pump store water.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Vladimir Putin praised Cold War-era scientists on Thursday for stealing U.S. nuclear secrets so that United States would not be the world's sole atomic power, in comments reflecting his vision of Russia as a counterweight to U.S. power.

Spies with suitcases full of data helped the Soviet Union build its atomic bomb, he told military commanders.

'You know, when the States already had nuclear weapons and the Soviet Union was only building them, we got a significant amount of information through Soviet foreign intelligence channels,' Putin said, according to state-run Itar-Tass.

'The were carrying the information away not on microfilm but literally in suitcases. Suitcases!'
