A group of governing party ministers have discussed that the government was heading towards a downfall. These ministers have discussed this issue soon after this week s Cabinet meeting.
They have said that although the proposal to increase fuel prices had been approved in the Cabinet, the ministers have discussed that they would be unable to visit the people in their constituencies due to the massive opposition that would rise against the government.
They have discussed that local fuel prices could be contained to some extent if the Family members minimized their corruption. |

The government reacted angrily to the main Opposition UNP s call for the establishment of a mechanism acceptable to the international community to inquire into war crime allegations directed at the Sri Lankan government.
Strongly criticizing the Lessons learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) headed by former Attorney General, C. R. de Silva for its failure to address accountability issues, the UNP asserted that the government couldn t move forward on the human rights record unless it undertook an inquiry up to international standard.
The UNP made its position on the war crimes inquiry public in parliament on Friday (Feb. 10). The UNP s move was conveyed to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on a two-day visit to Islamabad. The President is expected to be back today (Feb. 12). The new development was also brought to the notice of Defence Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Thilak Karunaratne has informed the Presidential Secretary that he would resign from the post if he was placed under political pressure.
Karunaratne has made this statement referring to requests being made by the racketeers in the stock market from MP Namal Rajapaksa to appoint a youngster named Epasinghe, who had lived in the US for some time, as the director general of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Karunaratne has explained that he has now understood that the Presidential Secretary s wife, Indrani Sugathadasa was forced to resign from the Commission due to undue pressure from the mafia in the stock market headed by Nimal Perera, Dilith Jayaweera, Varuni Amunugama and her husband Rohan Fernando. |
