Fishermen of Negombo are holding protests at several locations against the unprecedented fuel price hike.
Some of them have turned unruly, damaging vehicles and ordering the closure of shops.
At Dalupotha depot junction, a gathering of around 300 people blocked the main road to Chilaw with a lorry belonging to the Coconut Development Board.
They have stopped several other state-owned vehicles, damaged and attempted to topple them over in order to set them in fire.
They burnt several tyres they had brought with them, but were prevented from proceeding further, as an Army truck had arrived.
Later, wielding iron bars, they visited the shops in the area, demanding their closure.
At copra junction, fishermen brought their fishing trawlers with them and blocked the main road, demanding an immediate reduction in fuel prices.
