Finance should be allotted to affected areas. Thurairatnam appeal

Action should be taken to find a settlement to the affected peoples living conditions due to severe floods in the Batticaloa district. Such request was made by eastern provincial council member R.Thurairatnam to Disaster Management Minister.



An appeal was forwarded to the Disaster Management Minister regarding this mentioned a variety of crisis.



The appeal further quoted, many have got affected due to the continuous torrential rainfalls and floods in the Batticaloa. More than 63 thousand families have got affected and 800 and more have been displaced. 20 thousand acres of paddy fields have got affected owing to flood waters.



Some areas minor cyclones were prevailing with rain, hence Kaluwanchikudy, Onthachchimadam, Kurumanveli, Magiloor,Nawatkuda and Kepppaveli villages, houses were partially and totally had got damaged.



Due to floods, tanks were opened and bridges were submerged in water.



Flood water had intruded to some homes, and rice bags, seeds including variety of grains which were stored has got destroyed.



Cultivation at elevated area were totally affected. Some areas house hold items have washed away in floods.



In some places, fishing equipment s has got completely damaged. Due to continuous torrential rainfalls and sea turbulence, fishermen were not able to go to mid sea.



Laborers are not in a position to do their daily jobs hence daily income has got obstructed. Transport roads are damaged hence transport service has got affected.



Due to this atmosphere, poverty has escalated in Batticaloa. Hence finance should be allocated to the affected areas.

Copies of the appeal had been forwarded to eastern provincial Chief Minister and Batticaloa District Government Agent.
